The best environmentally conscious surf zincs on the market

Why do we need Zinc?

As surfers and people of the water, we are constantly under attack from intense UV Rays and sun exposure. Finding the right zinc that fits our needs and keeps us worry-free and out there in the ocean is crucial. The sad reality is, surfers are statistically more likely to experience skin cancer within our lifetimes. However, with the right protection measures such as the right sunscreen and zinc, we can keep our skin healthy and safe while remaining worry-free while out in the lineup. Also, let’s be honest – we all know some old timers who look 20 years older than they are due to consistent sun exposure. Aging is beautiful, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with growing older, but let’s protect our bodies’ biggest organ and keep ourselves safe for a lifetime of epic rides.

Our choices affect the ocean

Now on another note, we need to protect the ocean in the process of protecting ourselves. Sadly many zincs and sunscreens on the market contain serious chemicals that damage coral reefs and negatively affect sea life. Luckily there is a plethora of reef-safe and eco-friendly products on the market that can stop your body from absorbing harsh chemicals but also keep your home break healthy and happy in the process.

What is the best option for sun protection while surfing?

This article highlights barrier sunscreens that are created to protect the face. They usually are visible when applied and are the best option for surfers. Make sure you join our mailing list to see our future reviews on other forms of sun protection and don’t forget to check out our Bucket Hat Review if you need a little more protection than what Zinc can offer.

We noted in each review the percentage of zinc oxide (the active ingredient that protects our skin from the sun) in each product, along with the SPF and the overall cost + cost per oz. These 5 zincs are the best we were able to find. They perform well and protect under even the harshest UV rays while also being gentle on the skin, and the environment.

Let’s dive into our zinc lineup so you can find the best option for your lifestyle and environment.

Waxhead Tinted Facial Suncreen Stick

Waxhead Tinted Facial Suncreen Stick

This coral reef friendly sunscreen stick is a true non nano zinc oxide sunscreen. The perfect biodegradable sunscreen for sensitive skin!

25% Zinc Oxide, 30SPF, 3.7oz $33.99 ($9.19/oz)

This zinc stick is one of the cleanest  and simplest we’ve seen on the market. With just 4 ingredients, and approved by all marine parks nationally, less truly is more. It comes in both tinted and white options and a convenient push up stick applicator so you don’t need to worry about getting zinc stuck under your nails while digging it out of the tin. This is as simple as it gets, and because of its simple formula it isn’t the most moisturizing option on our list. If you prefer tin rather than a stick applicator they have the same formula in different packaging available here

Contains coconut oil

SurfDurt Eco Friendly Surf Zinc

SurfDurt Eco Friendly Surf Zinc

Reef safe & cruelty-free sunscreen made with 11, food-grade ingredients and non-nano zinc oxide.

23% Nano Zinc Oxide, 30SPF, 2oz, $28.99 ($14.50/oz)

When it comes to products that go above and beyond, we just adore SurfDurt and everything they do. Not only is this zinc totally reef safe and non toxic but they also produce it in San Diego, CA using solar power! SurfDurt has a slightly longer ingredient list, with the intention of nourishing the skin as it protects. It even contains carrot and raspberry seed oils which are thought to contain natural SPF. Overall this is an epic option in our zinc lineup. It’s a slightly smaller container than WaxHead, and comes in at a higher price point per oz but we feel it’s worth it for the benefits that come along with their thoughtful and vitamin packed ingredient list!

Contains Coconut Oil

Our Pick
Manda Organic Sun Paste

Manda Organic Sun Paste

Made from the wood of a small tree in Myanmar, Thanaka has been used for over 2000 years by Burmese people to protect and beautify the skin.

SPF 50, 20% Zinc Oxide, $28, 1.8oz, $19.84/oz

Manda’s Sun Paste has a unique ingredient that we were so happy to see on the label. If you’ve taken a journey over to south east asia, particularly Myanmar and Northern Thailand you may have noticed a white paste on many people’s skin during the daytime, particularly children. This is Thanaka, a powder from the Thanaka tree, and they use it in this zinc to make it even more protective! The formula is rich in antioxidants, deeply moisturizing and stays put during those long surf sessions. It’s the priciest option on our list, but also packs a whopping 50 SPF, and an ingredient list that makes splurging worth it.

Overall this is our #1 pick for epic quality and an amazing Zinc that we can rely on in the water.

Contains Coconut Oil

EIR NYC Surf Mud

EIR NYC Surf Mud

Premium natural sunscreen loaded with antioxidants and fatty acids that keep your skin protected and deeply hydrated.

SPF 50, 25% Zinc Oxide, $26, 2oz, $13/oz

This epic product can protect both your skin and hair from harmful UV rays. EIR NYC Surf Mud is made of all natural and organic food safe ingredients. It’s reef safe, super waterproof, and simple! The cocoa butter in EIR NYC Surf Mud helps to seal in moisture and keep your skin nourished no matter how long you’re in the water. This zinc also contains cocoa powder which they claim acts as a natural sun barrier and repairs dead skin cells with its high levels of antioxidants. Overall we love this zinc, and all of its ingredients. It also comes at a slightly lower price point per oz than the other options on our list while still nourishing and protecting simultaneously.

Raw Elements Ocean Ramsy World Reef Day

Raw Elements Ocean Ramsy World Reef Day

Light and creamy formula is very water-resistant up to 80 minutes and never stings the eyes.

SPF 30,25% Zinc Oxide,$16.99 1oz

We absolutely love the Raw Elements face stick. As we mention time and time again, we love a brand that gives back and takes care of our beautiful ocean. Not only is this product full of skin nourishing ingredients, but 10% of proceeds are given to Save The Turtles International, an amazing non profit focusing on making a positive effect for the international community and sea life. The packaging is biodegradable, and though it is at a higher price point per oz compared to most of the options on our list, we think the botanical ingredients featured in this product such as chamomile and calendula make it worth the price point.

All Good Sun Butter

All Good Sun Butter

Super hydrating and easy to blend thanks to coconut oil and jojoba oil, this sunscreen doesn’t leave your skin greasy and won’t clog your pores.

25% Zinc Oxide, SPF 50, 1oz, $9.99

Last but certainly not least on our list is All Good Sun Butter. All Good has become a household brand in the US and we love what they stand for. Founded by a woman in the 90’s and expanded over the past 20+ years this brand is tried and true. We know we can rely on them to protect us, and the 50 SPF in this Sun Butter proves that. We love the addition of calendula flower extract and jojoba oil in this formula, for skin protection and recovery at the same time.

Application Tips

Standard sunscreens need to be applied 20-30 minutes before hitting the waves, however the barrier style Face Zinc’s we’ve featured here begin working right away. These zincs are visible for a reason, it helps you to see if you have properly protected your skin. You don’t wanna see patches of skin peaking out after application. Apply generously, and reapply every 60-90 minutes if possible. Some surfers even bring their zinc out in the wetsuits to reapply in the water, however it isn’t something we’ve experimented with just yet!

Can I just use my standard sunscreen on my face for surfing?

Sure you can however most seasoned surfers will tell you that it simply doesn’t cut it. The thin watery or greasy formulas will often wash off and drip into the eyes, or wash off in a matter of minutes once you hit the water. The options we’ve reviewed here were created with surfing in mind, so they will stay put and protect you a lot better than your average run of the mill sunblock.

How do I get this stuff off?

We’ve all been there, post surf session in the shower aggressively scrubbing our zinc off, only to look in the mirror and see a ton of it is still there. Our favorite way to remove Zinc is with cleansing oil! It helps it to slide right off with ease so that we don’t need to aggressively scrub the delicate skin on our faces every time we get out of the water. We love this product from Badger for removing our zinc, and this one from Living Libations if you’re looking for something a little bit higher end. Both remove zinc with ease, however Badger uses more carrier oil than Living Libations does so we find it to be slightly less nourishing to our post sun skin.

Let’s Recap!

The most budget friendly option here is by Waxhead, coming in the largest package available in this selection and the lowest cost per oz. The formula is simple, but it gets the job done. Our absolute Favorite is Manda, for it’s amazing list of nourishing and thoughtful ingredients that give an extra boost of protection and assist in helping our skin recover from excessive time in the sun.

All of the other options on this list have been tried and tested by us, and we stand by their quality 100%! We hope you love them all as much as we do. Let us know which one you decided to take for a ride.
